About Me
Hello! My name is Maya, I am a first-class Classics and English graduate from the University of Oxford with significant experience in subject tutoring and Oxbridge admission coaching.I fully appreciate the significance 1-to-1 tuition can have on a student's ability, confidence, and enjoyment in a subject. After I received such teaching at Oxford (having come from large state comprehensive schools), I ended up coming 2nd in my cohort in my finals. I want to help others realise their potential in the same way -- whatever they are aiming for.
I can offer Oxbridge admissions coaching, as well as teaching to all school levels in: English Language, English Literature, History, Classics, Latin, and Classical Greek. Please enquire as to the level and content you require, as I can offer further subjects at KS3 level and under.

Maya is an excellent Latin teacher, and especially valuable for any 6th form level student aiming to do classics at Oxbridge.
Applications for Classics at Oxford and Cambridge both involve a language assessment, for which I provide expert tutoring and guidance in as a first-class Classics and English graduate from Oxford.
Classics at Oxford uses the Classics Admissions Test (CAT) for Course I (for students with Latin/Greek to A Level) or the Classical Language Aptitude Test (CLAT) for Course II (for students without Latin/Greek) to decide who will be invited for interview. At Cambridge only candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to take such assessment, which will be a translation exercise for the 3-year course, or a language aptitude interview for the 4-year. All assessments involve careful application of linguistic knowledge, whether of classical languages or English, which I will ensure you are extremely well-prepared to do.
Applicants are also required to submit two pieces of written work prior to interview, which I am able to advise about if requested.
I can provide expert tuition for all A Level English, History, and Classical CIvilisation subjects and exam boards. I am a friendly and engaging tutor who will help develop confidence in a course of 1:1 lessons -- particularly geared towards exam preparation.
Please also enquire if there is a specific topic or technique that you would like to focus on, as my teaching will always be catered to those needs.

English Language - Writing, Speaking, Listening ComprehensionCan learning English be fun, insightful, productive and effective at the same time? I believe so!
Whatever your background or profession, deciding to learn a foreign language is a great way to add another dimension to your life and make your mind work in a new way. You become a (slightly) different person, since along with a new language, one learns to look at the world in a slightly different way. This is why my approach to teaching English is not only aimed at laying or strengthening the foundational knowledge - grammar, speaking, writing and listening skills, but also at introducing students to the culture of the English-speaking population. We will find out what English speakers find funny, what drives them to tears, what makes them feel proud and what they get embarrassed about.
Open to students of all levels, my course usually is taught online, using a variety of visual aids and a wide range of material, from textbooks to YouTube videos. In teaching advanced learners, I often refer to pieces of literature such as novels and poems, since they easily spark discussions, which in turn improves the students' grasp and feel of the language. In doing so, I take students beyond ordinary textbooks and grammar books, since they are no more than guides to learning, not absolute authorities, and because to me language is a living, constantly evolving matter, which you must submerge yourself into in order to understand.
In addition to my unorthodox approach, what sets me apart is a collection of unique, language-related experiences, which translate into a good ability to understand nuances of the English language. A native Russian speaker, I have lived in the UK for over 5 years, went to a Scottish boarding school and have even completed a university degree in English. Thanks to my linguistic and cultural competency, I will make sure that you are never lost in translation! Are you interested? Then contact me today!

Detailed Tswana/Setswana grammar class taught by MotswanaSetswana is a rich, rhythmic language spoken in Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Belonging to the Bantu family, it closely resembles other languages in the region.
I have found learning Setswana through several terrific teachers, thorough textbooks and daily life enriching.
Growing up in Botswana, speaking this beautiful and intricate language, or at least making an effort to do so, can transform the way you live in Botswana.
I have taught semester-long regular beginners Setswana lessons to children aged 7-12 and adults, with strong emphasis on understanding grammar by breaking it down into “formulas” for how to form tenses and sentences. I teach these and vocabulary through a mix of traditional explanatory lectures, practice exercises and creative games, accompanied by study techniques I have found very useful for learning foreign languages. I have also worked as a trained English tutor, and study linguistics at university, both of which have shaped me to better understand and teach language.
Each class will consist of grammar formulas (eg: basic conjugation in the present tense: linking pronoun [for the human noun class group, for example: ke=I, o=you, o=him/her, re=we, le=you plural, ba=they] + “tla” [as in “will”] + verb), some vocabulary words, spoken or written exercises or games to go through together and longer practice exercises to build independent confidence.
My teaching materials I use I developed whilst living in Botswana, and have already been used with my aforementioned classes. I hope they can help you too !

Learner English for beginners and all other learnersAcquiring additional languages will broaden your horizons; it will enable you to interact with a greater number of individuals and enhance your social network, while also enhancing critical thinking skills from diverse perspectives that may result in significant career opportunities. Cultural awareness, improved communication skills and enhanced academic performance are just a few of the benefits of learning new languages or improving your language skills.
For an academic student, I would monitor their current classes, design exercises to enhance their proficiency and concentrate on identifying and ameliorating their weaknesses.
In a lesson for a volunteer learner, I would prioritise speaking practice, since the pronunciation of certain syllables is essential.
