Approach to Teaching – I favor a structured approach. I devise lesson plans in advance of every lesson, catering to the student's specific needs. – Academic lessons tend to be structured around specific sections of the syllabus, or particular topics that students require help with. – I employ a seminar-style format. I flesh out ideas with the aid of quotations, other audio-visual resources, and analytical commentary. I structure my lesson plans with a view to providing gaps, in which students are able to ask questions about the content. I am also happy for students to interrupt the flow of the lesson if a burning question arises. – I use Powerpoint to provide students with a variety of resources and visual stimuli. Lesson Structure – Academic lessons tend to be 45 minutes to an hour in length, but I can adapt my teaching schedule to provide students with additional support if needed. – Typically violin lessons range in length from 30 minutes to an hour, but I am flexible: I am more than happy to devise a lesson structure that caters to a student's requirements. Academic Credentials – I am a candidate for a Ph.D. in Music at the University of Cambridge. – I hold an MPhil in Music from the University of Cambridge, where I specialized in Historical Musicology and Musical Aesthetics. – I have a first-class music degree (74.4%) from the University of Manchester, where I won three Hargreaves Prizes for Academic Achievement. – I have worked as an Assistant Music Teacher, which involved teaching Music A-Level students. Professional Credentials – I have worked as a private violin teacher for 7 years (since I was 17). I have taught a variety of students, from beginners starting their instrumental training to more advanced performers looking to improve their technical facility and performance skills. – I have an extensive portfolio of performing credits on documentary films. Hi, I'm Natalie! I’ve been working as a professional writer and editor since 2009, and I started to offer writing tutoring in 2010. During all my years of writing coaching, I have worked with hundreds of students who have never been taught how to write strong, descriptive sentences. They don’t understand how to construct a well-organized, meaningful paragraph, or they have never seen an essay developed without the famous “5 Paragraph Structure” outline in place. They do not know what critical thinking is or how it helps them become assertive, enthusiastic writers. The writing process itself is also a learning process from start to finish. Before we begin lessons, students submit a short writing sample so I can assess which skill area we should target first. Writing coaching is where I show and guide my students how to better their writing using different techniques. Like in any sport or the arts, evaluation and constructive criticism are another important aspect of their writing growth. They get feedback and advice specific to the assignments and projects they are working on, and practice outside of lessons is necessary if they want to see regular improvement and make progress. We also work on writing mechanics, which includes English grammar rules. This helps them become stronger writers and speakers, aware of common mistakes and how to avoid them. You want your child to practice grammar skills with a native speaker who has studied English for decades and knows the rules inside out. I offer creative writing sessions for teenagers and adults, suitable for complete beginners as well as writers who already have written work (short stories, scripts, monologues, poems, etc.) and would like feedback, structure and discussion. These sessions focus on storytelling and the creative process, using writing exercises, prompts and conversation to help develop ideas into characters, worlds and scenes, with the option to edit or rewrite existing texts. My approach is practical and flexible, focused on helping each writer find their own voice rather than following rigid formulas. I have a postgraduate degree in Storytelling and have published a book, as well as essays in magazines and newspapers, and continue to work on scriptwriting projects. Alongside writing, I work as an actress, which strongly informs my approach to character, voice and dialogue. Sessions are available in English or Portuguese, online or in person in Lisbon, in a café or similar relaxed space, and are always adapted to each student’s level and interests.
