In addition to my busy playing career, I offer individual lessons on Saxophone, Clarinet and Flute, and in Music Theory in North Essex, East Hertfordshire, East London or online. I am also able to offer tutoring for GCSE and A-level Music and Music Technology courses for individuals or small groups. My fundamental belief with regard to music education is that it should be a fun, enjoyable and rewarding experience. With this aim in mind, I strive to develop an approach tailored towards each student, taking account of their experience level, their personal musical goals and their own musical interests and tastes. I am equally at home teaching Jazz, Pop, Soul or the ever-expanding repertoire of classical saxophone music. I have a wealth of experience in music education, teaching adults and young people in a wide variety of settings and contexts. In addition to having been an instrumental tutor since 1999: I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and have spent several years as a head of music in state secondary schools and at a 6th Form College; have taught and examined A-level courses in Music and Music Technology; have directed various ensembles within educational establishments and have devised and delivered workshops with a focus upon jazz and improvisation. My students have a 100% pass rate in their ABRSM practical and theory exams, with many attaining Merit and Distinction passes (including at grade 8). I have an advanced CRB check and am happy to provide testimonials upon request.

I am a professional music teacher, and I specialize in drums, guitar, and piano. I have been highly recommended and described by my previous students as 'fun and easy to get along with', 'very easy to understand and learn from', and 'a talented music teacher with a professional and enjoyable attitude'. I teach from a beginner to an expert level on each instrument and absolutely love to inspire all generations to enhance their musical skills to the fullest. I am currently looking to take on younger students nearer the beginner level, but am more than happy to take on intermediate to advanced musicians of all ages as well. I teach in a very practical way, encouraging students to take what I show them step by step, as I break down and go through each task with them, working at a pace which suits them best. I will work to strengthen the student's ability behind the instrument as a whole, whilst focusing on their areas that need development and introducing new, challenging exercises each lesson, which will allow them to improve at a healthy pace. My aim above all else is to make sure the student enjoys themselves and comes out of every lesson feeling eager and excited for the next one! With that I aim to get the student as comfortable and confident behind the instrument as possible and to inspire them to express themselves through it. Side note: I only teach Grades on the drums (up to Grade 8), and guitar (up to Grade 4). I do not teach Grades on the piano, as I much prefer to teach on playing ability and self-expression through the instrument rather than sight-reading. However, other than sight-reading, I am happy to teach everything you will find in the Graded books and more. I teach anything from classical to contemporary music on the piano.

I have extensive training in music and singing and have attended The Brit School, gaining Triple Distinction* as well as Trinity Laban Conservatoire, where I graduated this year with a first class honours degree. For five months of my degree I was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to study Norwegian folk music at The Grieg Academy, Norway. This trip helped to sculpt my music and my current projects take a lot of influence from folk as well as free jazz and free improvisation. I have taught privately for two years after training for eight years. I teach budding vocalists of all ages. I have helped prepare students for exams as well as encouraged students back into singing after years out of practice. I like to take a creative approach with students, to engage with them about short and long term goals as well as encouraging them to keep practice diaries to document their progress and for self evaluation. I am very passionate about teaching as I believe it is one of the most rewarding activities - watching someone grow as they learn not only the basics of technique but when they start to develop their own sound. I believe I am an inspiring teacher and firm but fair when it comes to homework and discipline. I provide support to the students and have received feedback showing I am encouraging and helpful after each and every lesson - “ 5/5, Fantastic lessons - Rowan is great at giving feedback and at helping me set, review and achieve my personal goals. I always come away believing I have improved my knowledge and feeling inspired.” Jasmine Gorsuch, previous student. Over the last couple of years I have performed in many settings in the UK, Norway and China and have invaluable experience gigging with various ensembles. I can help students with how to lead a band confidently once they are at that level. I am also proficient in teaching composition and music theory as well as some more advanced jazz theory and harmony. I also have knowledge in music business and event planning as well as how to market yourself as an artist.
