Music Theory - how to read music, understand it completely, and use it for performing, composing, learning.

No matter where you are in your musical journey, theory is necessary to gain musical freedom. Even knowing the basics allows an aspiring musician to start creating arrangements, compose, transpose, read music better, look for different colours in harmony, and much more.

I have designed a course that will bring students through the aspects of theory, notation, harmony, structure and form to help them become more fluent in reading, composing or performing.

About Me

Hey! I'm Elize and I've been immersed in music all of my life.

I started studying music at the age of three because of my mother who's a choir conductor and singer so I would join her in choirs at that age - later I was part of many choir collectives, singing festivals and vocal performances. At the age of five I started playing cello in music school and started to truly learn theory and music history. Three years later I started learning piano, too. I've been studying, performing, writing ever since - and I've been professionally teaching cello, piano, theory and composition for the last six years.

I've performed as a soloist, chamber musician and part of an orchestra. It's difficult to think of a genre I haven't performed for an audience. Not only have I been involved with academic music but I've been part of big bands, jazz ensembles, function bands and rock bands. I've been a session musician and a lone entertainer - all of these experiences have made me a better musician and I choose to focus my experience to help others on their musical journey.

I just graduated from one of the best music universities in the world - the Royal College of Music and, while it was a challenging experience, it gave me a lot of valuable insight on how we best process musical information and what we sometimes do that's wasteful.

Education

Royal College of Music, London, UK - Master of Performance (2018 - 2020)

ERASMUS+ UMAS Arts Academy, Split, Croatia - exchange program (2016-2017)

Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music - Dual baccalaureate in music performance (cello) and education (2014 - 2018)

Jazeps Medins Riga Music Secondary school - cello performance (2010 - 2014)

Riga Centre Language School (2001 - 2010)

1st Riga Music School - main: cello (2000 - 2009)

Experience / Qualifications

Baccalaureate in music education and performance, master's in performance.
Six years of teaching privately and professionally.
I've also tutored in summer workshops at the Latvian Music Festivals in Madona, Latvia.
I can't imagine living my life without this beautiful instrument and have been studying for more than 20 years already. I can help you learn proper posture, expression, technique, how to save energy, how to stay relaxed and enjoy the music! After just finishing my baccalaureate in cello performance and education, and my postgraduate in performance, I am even more able to help my students excel. I've worked with ages 4 - 70 and all my students have had wonderful progress. I've taught hobbyists, aspiring professionals and competitors. If you are interested in learning the art of playing cello, give it a try! You won't regret it!
Feel like picking up a new hobby? Want to refresh your knowledge? Looking for a new way to be creative? Why not learn how to read and write music - who knows, maybe you're a composer at heart? I have created a seven step program that takes you through the basics and teaches how to recognize clefs, range, and expands the limits of possibilities. While day 1 is an introduction on the build of music and what notes are, by day 5 you already understand how key signatures work and how to write down a tune that you hear somewhere. Or, maybe, you have an instrument and always wanted to be able to pick up a piece of music and be able to play it? Or, perhaps, it is time to become the composer and notate your creations to better remember and share? Whatever it might be, learning to read and write music gives you a new, exciting skill and opens a door to a whole new world!

Classical Guitar, Mandolin, Music theory lessons by enthusiastic tutor and performer
Enthusiastic guitar tutor and performer. I started playing classical guitar at the age of 6, and my formal musical education begun at the age of 9 when I started attending a music school in Croatia. After 6 years of primary school I continued studying classical guitar at secondary music school in Varazdin, Croatia. During that period I received training in classical harmony, Counterpoint (polyphony), Solfeggio, Music history and gained plenty experience at orchestral playing and choral singing. I decided to continue my musical education in Manchester where I was studying undergraduate degree at the Royal Northern College of Music and currently I am studying at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. As a performing guitarist, I have successfully participated and won prizes in a number of international competitions in the UK, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Hercegovina. Although my studies are primarily related to classical music, I am comfortable playing and performing music in a range of other styles and genres. I am also experienced with mandolin and Croatian folk instrument called tamburitza.
