This Music Theory class is designed to help students truly understand how music works, not just memorise rules. The course is practical, applied, and directly connected to playing music, especially at the piano.

Students learn music theory in a clear and structured way, covering harmony, rhythm, form, and listening skills, while immediately applying these concepts to real music. The class supports pianists, singers, composers, and instrumentalists at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Alongside Western classical and contemporary theory, students also explore Bollywood music, popular harmony, and stylistic elements from modern genres. The aim is to build strong musical awareness, confidence, and independence.

How the Class Is Conducted

1. One-to-one online sessions
2. Concepts explained clearly using examples at the piano
3. Regular listening and analysis of real musical works
4. Exercises adapted to the student’s level and goals
5. Theory is always connected to sound, practice, and musical meaning, not taught in isolation.

What Students Learn
1. Reading and understanding notation
2. Scales, intervals, chords, and harmony
3. Rhythm, meter, and time organisation
4. Functional harmony and chord progressions
5. Analysis of classical, contemporary, and Bollywood music
6. Applied theory for performance and composition
7. Advanced students also work on analysis, arrangement, and original music.

Who This Class Is For
1. Beginners who want a clear foundation
2. Pianists and instrumentalists who want to understand what they play
3. Students preparing for exams or higher studies
4. Songwriters and composers
5. Young teachers seeking stronger theoretical clarity

About Me
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and teaching music has become one of the most meaningful aspects of who I am. I am a professionally trained pianist and music educator with over 15 years of teaching experience, currently working as a university professor and Assistant Dean of Academics at a music college in Mumbai.

For me, teaching is not simply about playing the correct notes. It is about building confidence, musical understanding, discipline, and a genuine connection with music. I strongly believe that every student learns differently, and my responsibility as a teacher is to understand how each student learns and to guide them patiently, thoughtfully, and with clarity.

My classes are structured, calm, and encouraging. I value consistency and clear progression, while ensuring that lessons remain engaging and meaningful. I work closely with each student to develop solid piano technique, rhythmic precision, listening skills, and musical awareness, while also creating space for creativity and self-expression.

In addition to Western classical and contemporary piano training, I am formally trained in Carnatic music and the Indian rāga system, with a strong foundation in improvisation, melodic development, and rhythmic complexity. This background allows me to offer students a deeper understanding of melody, rhythm, and musical imagination, enriching both performance and creative work across styles.

I enjoy teaching:
1. beginners who want a clear and supportive start
2. intermediate students seeking structure and direction
3. advanced students looking for depth, interpretation, and creative growth
4. adults returning to music or learning for personal fulfilment
5. young teachers and aspiring music educators who wish to strengthen their technique, pedagogy, musicianship, and teaching approach

Alongside piano performance, I also teach music theory, composition, contemporary styles, and Bollywood piano, helping students connect formal musical understanding with the music they enjoy. Advanced students—and teachers in training—are encouraged to create and develop their own original music, as creativity is central to becoming a confident and complete musician.

As a teacher, I am patient, organised, punctual, and deeply committed to my students’ progress. I strive to create a respectful and motivating learning environment where students and fellow educators feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.

If you are looking for a teacher who values structure, depth, cross-cultural understanding, and long-term musical development, I would be very happy to work with you.
