Trusted teacher: Having had 15 years of piano lessons, one thing has been constant through the performances and exams I have taken - Enjoyment. This is a key aspect that the students enjoy playing the instrument and are motivated to keep on playing and learning new pieces or techniques. Piano has often in my life been my biggest hobby and an escape from other things going on, and this is something I hope to provide to anyone interested in learning this wonderful instrument. I am able to teach all abilities ranging from causal lessons up to Grade 8 standard for Piano. Having had 9 years of singing within Chapel, University and Scottish Choirs, I have been able to cover a wide range of repertoire and techniques on how to improve my singing style. During both school and university, Singing within choirs was my biggest extra-curricular, and I aim to teach lessons in a way that can encourage budding singers to grow in their confidence and ability. Singing is a social and enjoyable experience, and this is the key thing in lessons that students choose to learn songs and techniques they are keen to cover and feel engaged when improving their singing. I am able to teach all abilities ranging from causal lessons up to Grade 5 standard for Singing. I have both an ARSM Diploma and an ATCL Associate's Degree from ABRSM and Trinity College London, meaning I play up to Undergraduate standard. Combined with being a Graduate in Mathematics and Music, which has included opportunities to teach in my degree for Mathematics, means I have knowledge over how to ensure lessons remain engaging and students are kept motivated. I am a member of the University of Edinburgh's choir and NYCOS National Choir, while also having a Choral Scholarship at Church of the Sacred Heart and Old Saint Paul's Church. Involvement within these, along with past choirs such as the Fettes College Chapel Choir, has meant I am a strong singer and know how to get the best out of a singing lesson. Helping out with conducting across some of these choirs has given me experience of teaching Music, and alongside teaching Mathematics to primary schools, I can use these skills of being organised and having good communication to help make my lessons engaging.

My name is Jake and I am a skilled, calm and professional guitar tutor based in Midlothian. I have studied the guitar for over twenty years, and completed the BA (Hons) Popular Music course at Edinburgh Napier University in 2014 with a 1st Class Honours degree. I am PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) certified; proof can be provided upon request. Quotes from current and past students: “Jake has been my guitar teacher since 2017, and I’ve been enjoying the lessons thoroughly. He’s got amazing talent and knows exactly what he’s talking about – theory (scales, modes), technique, improvisation etc. He’s able to teach all of that in an interesting way. He’s also very flexible and keen to either recommend a lesson subject or ask me what I’d like to learn instead. He’s also very friendly and easy to talk to, so the lessons just fly by. Overall, can’t recommend him enough!” – Lukasz. “I have been learning guitar with Jake since 2019 and he has helped me go from an absolute beginner with zero experience to being able to play songs which I want to learn. Its been a really good experience and has allowed me to learn how to do something which I had always wanted to try. Lessons were in person up until March 2020 and then moved to online Skype due to the covid lockdown. Jake had invested in equipment such as professional cameras and microphones to be able to provide digital lessons to the same quality and high standard which I was having in person and I have continued to improve my skills during this time. Now I have the option of online or in-person. I would highly recommend Jake's services if you are looking to learn guitar!” - Craig. I am the most often and best reviewed Midlothian/Edinburgh-based guitar tutor Affordable guitar lessons for ages 10+ and any style ranging from acoustic pop and jazz to blues/rock/metal. Chords, soloing, technique, songwriting or theory. Easy-going, friendly and effective teaching methods can help you quickly master a new skill. I can teach you everything you need to know, and the lessons will be focused around you, your style, and what you want to learn. Please contact me for details and prices. “I have been working under Jake's guidance for almost four years now, and I couldn't be more satisfied. Jake's approach to teaching is fresh and dynamic, he has the patience required of a great instructor, and always maintains high-quality standards. The learning materials he will provide are excellent and, as you will progress, more and more personalised. Due to the covid pandemic, Jake seamlessly moved his lessons to an online format (via Skype) setting up everything to match the in-person sessions, and nothing of note got lost in the transition and the quality wasn't affected at all. Could not recommend more if you are looking for an experienced and engaging musician to learn from scratch or grow further!” - Federico

I have been writing songs now for 30 years, including being asked to write lyrics for local charities and for special occasions. Songwriting theory and musical theory and compositions can often take the fun out of lifting and playing music - whether its a guitar, microphone, drum kit! These 1 hour sessions give the customer an opportunity to explore musical styles, rhythms, while personalising a song for their own use. Every song created will be supplied in an electronic copy, with the lyrics displayed in a certificate explaining the background to the song/ lyrics/ tune etc. Option1 : Tutor and customer discuss the scope of the song - whwether the song is to be personal - about someone, somewhere, a particular event - whether the song is to be uplifting or melancholy, with distortion, or smooth? These personalised songs can be so well received; especially with a copy of a certificate explaining why it was written, when it was written and for whom. Option 2: The Random Song - pick some random words and create a masterpiece; see the story come to life as the song verses merge into a meaningful chorus.... or let the fun begin, and let the children ( small and grown up) have loads of ideas which randomly converge into YOUR song! Can be done in person as part of a 'party' or online over Teams etc. No two sessions are ever the same; and multiple members can dial in if you want them to share in the Songwriting process! Please feel free to ask questions, I have sample certificates available, and would love to hear from you! Every session comes with an e version of the recorded song, and an electronic copy of the certificate, showing the lyrics and details of the songwriter, date created/recorded.

After dedicating 14 years to mastering the guitar, I've developed a comprehensive understanding of guitar playing, encompassing both foundational techniques and advanced music theory. In these lessons, I'll be sharing the wealth of knowledge I've accumulated over this extensive period of learning. I will be covering a broad range of guitar techniques, including fingerpicking, strumming techniques, major and minor chords, power chords, barre chords, riffs, scales, finger warm-ups, practising any song of your choice, string bending, pull-offs, hammer-ons, harmonics, strumming patterns, and slides. All are provided with diagrams etc. For music theory, I will begin by covering the fundamentals, including notes, strings, and the musical 12-note chromatic scale alphabet on the guitar. As students progress, we will delve into more advanced topics such as tones, semitones, chord progressions, circle of fifths, scale formulas and chord terminology. Additionally, we will explore concepts like consonance and dissonance and pitch practice to develop relative pitch. (You have to be born with perfect pitch but you can learn relative pitch with practise!) Then advancing to jazz theory, we'll explore; jazz scale formulas, jazz chord progressions, swing techniques, major and minor 7th chords, major and minor 9th chords, dominant, augmented, half-diminished, diminished, sus2 and sus4 chords. And then jazz scales and the art of re-harmonising a song (changing the chords to jazz chords). All music theory will be intertwined with guitar practice as both can't be done without the other! One observation I've made while learning guitar through lessons is that information is often doled out incrementally, making it feel like a breadcrumb trail. Guitar knowledge and skills seem to be closely guarded and usually gatekept unless actively sought out. I strongly believe that the extensive knowledge I've acquired over 14 years of playing should be fruitfully shared in a more comprehensive and accessible manner, of course while being tailored to the pace of the students. In essence, I'm convinced that the depth of my understanding I've gained could be effectively conveyed and learnt within a two-year timeframe without including the time it takes to master the skill with practice, of course, I'd like to make it easier for people to learn the guitar and the theory behind it. I have also graduated with a distinction for my Music Performance and Production UAL Level 3 Course and have experience teaching guitar in London and Bristol before. The lessons will be taught in English so practising your English with me is also a plus, a foundational knowledge of English is required to take the lessons.

I am a professional violin and viola teacher based in Zurich, teaching in person at students' location or online, in English, German or Russian. (Reviews below) As well as instrumental teaching and ensemble coaching of at all levels over the last 12 years, I’ve led numerous professional workshops, including ‘Music First’ and ‘Music Masters’ workshops in London and was an assistant on the Primary Arpeggione viola course and at the Springgrove music competition. As a member of the European String Teachers’ Association, I participated in their conferences across Europe. I have prepared students for music exams at all levels, working with them on music theory, aural and sight reading skills, and regularly accompany students on the piano. I perform internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, recently including at the Victoria Hall in Geneva, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Philharmonie in Berlin. I’m a Tillett Trust and Villa Musica artist, winner of the Małopolska competition, Barbirolli Prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and Len Lickorish Memorial Prize at the Royal Overseas League International Strings Competition. I hold a masters degree with first class honours from the class of Tabea Zimmermann at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, and Bachelors with the same distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London. * Reviews * Stephanie W. Toby is an outstanding instructor and works with children very naturally. My 11 year old son has been taking lessons with Toby for over two months and is eager for each lesson. Toby is extremely talented, but beyond that, he engages my son deeply with the music itself, fundamental techniques, music theory, and even the interpretation of the music. Toby is kind, encouraging, and works with students at a level that is appropriate. He has allowed my son to chose music that if fun and interesting to practice, even though the pieces are challenging. In fact, I often sit in to listen to the lessons, as they are so good. My son has had a couple of lessons with Toby while company has been over, and everyone has commented on how amazing Toby is as an instructor. I can not recommend Toby enough and hope to continue lessons with him for a long time. Pamela B. Toby is really a great teacher who teaches the pieces well and brings out more of the feeling in the playing. We particularly liked that. Good technique is one thing, but feeling the music is such an important element in music and learning a piece of music. He also teaches theory very well! Tatyana M. Toby is a fantastic teacher. He is very reliable as he is consistently organised and punctual. I constantly see progress in my child’s music skills because every lesson Toby delivers is effective and well-structured. I highly recommend him to all who wish to learn or improve on their music skills. Shaun W. Knowledgeable and frank, Toby was able to provide me with crucial information quickly and efficiently. Hanna S. Toby can explain things very well and understandably, is patient and friendly and easily adapts to the student's level. Jacques R. Toby is an excellent tutor with top teaching skills..he teaches music theory in a way my 12 year old son understands the lesson easily; Toby is very attentive

Piano lessons - music theory and harmony - for any level (Budapest)
Giorgia
I started my lessons with Giorgia four months ago, and I am so glad to have found her. As a 26-year-old beginner, I was not sure if I should even try to pursue learning an instrument at this point. But now I am so glad I did! I am learning online, and I was a little unsure of how lessons via webcam would go. Despite my prejudice, everything turned out great, even though my setup is quite basic. Her approach to teaching is very creative. She is able to explain things that seem hard to put into words, and she always finds comparisons and descriptions that convey clearly little details of approach that make a lot of difference in the end result. For any difficulty I encountered, she presented methods of exercise that helped correct it. Another thing that I appreciate is that from one lesson to the next, the volume of work is challenging enough that I feel I am making progress, but not to the point that I am overwhelmed. Also, even though I am just beginning and the pieces are not that complex, she explains the musical interpretation in a way that not only helps me advance my skill but also enriches the way I understand and listen to music, and I find great value in that. Her manner of teaching is very organic, and she is a patient teacher with a warm presence. I wholeheartedly recommend her lessons!

Singing classes for all age students and different vocal styles (pop, folk or classical) Online or Offline in Vienna (Vienna)
Denise
Mrs. Denise has demonstrated passion, mastery and, above all, great versatility as a teacher. She has skillfully recaptured the spirit of a Medieval song with imaginative vocal intensity, while discussing in great detail the lyrical content, linguistic nuances, and the historical context of the song, as well as guiding me through the intricacies of the Occitan language with confidence and poise.

Private lessons of violin and viola, solfeggio, improvisation, and chamber music (Edinburgh)
Emma
I booked Emma to provide five half-hour lessons for my 9-year-old daughter as an introduction to improvising. She managed to quickly assess my daughter's initial abilities, and come up with some solid starting points that were all well-explained and which my daughter understood and enjoyed. Many thanks!
