The Chomskian Linguistics model: what this course focuses on and how I can help you

The premise: A theory of universal grammar that aims to explain why syntax has the properties it does, and how the human child comes to the world with ‘genetic guidance’ in their native language competence.

This is a cognitive approach to grammar, not merely taxonomic (I am aware that most schools in the UK don’t teach grammar).

Some parts of the theory (which spans 70 years to date) are taught in different universities at different stages of its development. Students have approached me to know more (or clarify) the Minimalist program (1995 onwards) which has aimed to reduce the conceptual apparatus and simplify the theory. We shall look at VPISH (VP-internal subject hypothesis) and VP shells as well as doing away with intermediate projections which have relied on X-bar theory. The latter is still taught at some freshers’ classes. A good grasp of grammatical categories (noun, verb, adverb) will be necessary as well as grammatical functions (predicate, subject, inflection, adjunct). Some courses are still relying on binding and c-command, as well as other theoretical landmarks which are necessary for understanding the evolution of the theoretical model.

Exercises set and essay titles will rely on the student’s targeted requirements (as per their own university). For those who want to prepare for a forthcoming university course, or wish to explore this grammatical model, we shall follow UK authors who have shown a more sympathetic approach to learning.

As a full time Data Lead and Exams Officer at Conisborough College, I have a unique view of performance metrics, and the latest knowledge on GCSE exams. My past tutoring experiences range from teaching secondary school classrooms and a lot of work with 1-on-1's. When it comes to exam preparation, my strategy is always textbook oriented. My principle in education has always been to know what I don't know and then deal with my not-knowing of that chapter/area.

I'm a school teacher who is based in London. I have been a certified teacher for about a year and a half, and my main subjects are science, biology, social science, and math. I also teach music, and used to be a piano teacher at a studio in Canada for 10 years. I can help with test preparation, essay writing, homework completion, reading, and general support. I've completed my GCSEs a little over a year ago , I'm on here to fund myself in the future (primarily university) .
I've averaged above an A (above grade 7) overall with recent experience and am still attending sixth form . Because of this I'll be able to easily relate to and figure out the needs of my tutee as I was in their position not too long ago .
I myself studied based on topic rather than necessarily textbooks , this means that I can make due with any textbook or other material (this accounts for difference in exam boards).
I can teach a concept from the ground up , or to solidify knowledge on topics as well as teach the basic principles for understanding the topic in the first place . I'm especially good at understanding and taking advantage of mark schemes to maximise grades , despite if the topic is completely unbeknownst to you . Though this seems minor , this tactic means you'll almost never score zero marks on a question . Ergo : if you can do half of the questions on a 100 mark test you'll get around 50 marks (high C to low B grade , grade 5 to 6) however even without understanding the rest it's easy to get at least another 15 marks up to around 25 (you usually cannot get over half marks without getting close to the answer , which is why half the remaining marks is a typical maximum) putting your grade up to to a minimum of a strong B or a maximum of a solid A (min of a grade 6 and max of grade 8) all of which requires minimal work which you won't forget . In English a similar thing can be done with punctuation , so long as you use a type of punctuation once ; you can score easy additional marks and get more marks on other criteria due to the examiner's bias . This is my forté .
